Simply amazing, although the question has to be asked why does Azerbaijan get good bands to play at semi-official events why we get crappy pop music, usually by singers who have to mime because they can't hit the right notes when singing live.

Hi Ani, thanks for the link. I remember this guy's blog from during Eurovision earlier in the year. Forgot to subscribe to the RSS with (yet another) reinstall of Windows,

Well, anyway, the article he links to speculates about a number of choices, but I think his point is simply that we take Eurovision too seriously.

Really, just have real national competitions, and let the best song/act win and enter the international one. Still, there's talent in this region.

Ironically, however, talent is not actually what it takes to win Eurovision. Never watched it apart from a few minutes ever in my life...

...until Armenian excitement about Sirusho saw me break with tradition and do so this year. I suppose having to cover blog reaction also had something to do with that too.

If this guy's right, it looks like Azerbaijan has picked its Eurovision entry--you'll probably be disappointed (make that definitely):

Anyway, good blog in case you've never stumbled on it.

Onnik, Turkish not Azerbaijani, but if you get a chance, you should seek out this German film on music in Istanbul--it covers a huge range and includes Roma and Kurdish musicians, but, alas, no Armenians (well, maybe not...) It also has the most incredible rap performance I've ever heard, and i don't even like rap music! There are lots of cuts of it on YouTube, if the film's not available in Armenia.

"Crossing the Bridge: The Sound of Istanbul"

Fantastic stuff. An Azeri student put a PowerPoint presention together on Azerbaijan and used Unformal for the music. Perhaps too heavy but DAMN good. Listen, enjoy and learn about Azerbaijan at the same time (although the reference to democracy is questionable to say the least).

Interestingly, there's one mention on the Eurovision blogs of Unformal's singer, Delya, being of mixed blood -- Armenian AND Azerbaijani. We do know there are around 10-20,000 Armenians still living in Azerbaijan (mainly women married to Azerbaijanis) so would be interesting to know how far her Armenian origins stretch back (if true).
