As it turned out, the stadium was pretty full -- estimates around 40,000. Not sure how many people bought their tickets or if a whole load were handed out free as some rumors allege, but anyway, it was quite respectable regardless.

Unfortunately, few Turkish fans were present, but maybe that was for the best, I'm not sure.

PRESIDENT OF TURKEY ARRIVES IN YEREVAN

YEREVAN, SEPTEMBER 6, ARMENPRESS: President of Turkey Abdullah Gul arrived in Yerevan. Armenian Foreign Minister Edward Nalbandian met the Turkish president at “Zvartnots” airport. Foreign Minister of Turkey Ali Babajan is also in the delegation headed by the president.

Armenian President Serzh Sargsyan will meet the Turkish delegation in the residence of the President of Armenia. After the meeting, the two presidents will visit “Hrazdan” stadium where they will watch together Armenia-Turkey football game.

The first photos have also hit the wires:

Turkish President Abdullah Gul waves as he boards a plane in Ankara, Turkey, Saturday, Sept. 6, 2008, before leaving for Armenia to watch a soccer game that many hope will help the two countries overcome decades of antagonism rooted in Ottoman-era massacres of Armenians that many historians have called a genocide. Gul and his Armenian counterpart Serge Sarkisian will match their two national teams play each other in a World Cup qualifier. Gul is the first Turkish leader to set foot in Armenia since the ex-Soviet nation declared independence in 1991.

Mika from Unzipped just sms-ed the following to me from the football stadium at 6.50pm.

Lots of tickets available. Today they continued distribution of tickets for free. After ticketed people in, many will enter the stadium for free.

Pre-football match Yerevan: 3 hrs to go...

Turkey's president Gul has just arrived in Yerevan. Small groups of protesters from nationalist ARF-Dashnaktsutyun party (mostly, teenagers, children, many of them bused in from the regions, and occasional adults) could be seen in downtown Yerevan along the route of presidential cortège.

In the meantime, IA Regnum reports that as of midday 6 September, only 16 000 out of 53 000 tickets for the match were sold out. According to my sources, yesterday local authorities in Yerevan started distributing number of tickets for free.

I am off to the stadium. Go Armenia!!! Excitement!!! :)))
