Georgia: Armenia Über Alles
While sitting in a local bar the other night in Central Yerevan it was not surprising to hear Armenians from here and abroad applaud Russia for its military action in Georgia. What was shocking, however, was that the group in question were a collection of self-professed local and Diasporan neo-Nazis whose racism definitely extends to Georgians.
The toasts glorifying Russia went round among a group of people not even in tune with the reality of the republic — the Diasporan Armenians among them had no clue at all about the situation in the country — until one came that was the most unexpected of all.

Elsewhere, the reaction of Armenians is predictable. Considered an effective colony of Russia in the South Caucasus, many Armenians dislike Georgians more than they do Azerbaijanis and are firmly behind Russian attempts to battle Georgia. Indeed, said one shopkeeper today smiling:
Russia will fuck Georgia. Russia will fuck NATO. They should bomb Tbilisi. Today, I am not Armenian. I am Russian.
Let’s see if he feels the same when the conflict affects imports of goods and gas into the country. There are already some reports that flights which have to go through Georgian airspace have been cancelled from Yerervan’s Zvartnots airport.
Besides, no matter how reckless Saakashvili was with South Ossetia, there is no excuse for Russia to take the war into Georgia proper. It’s also a sign that Moscow will never allow Armenia to be a sovereign and independent country.
