The Queen Talks Turkey
Talk Turkey comments on the official state visit by H.M. Queen Elizabeth II. The Turkish blog based in the United State notes that the visit is quite an historic one and likely the last by a female British monarch in our lifetime. Her last visit was in 1971.
Queen Elizabeth II is paying an official visit to Turkey for the second time after 37 years. She said yesterday, in support of Turkey’s bid to join the EU, “Turkey is uniquely positioned as a bridge between East and West at a crucial time for the European Union and the world in general . . . playing a key role in promoting peace, political stability and economic development in some of the world’s most unsettled areas.” How true!
I’ve always been fond of the Queen, sometimes maybe even more than her subjects. After all, we might be witnessing history. She might be the last ‘Queen’ of United Kingdom (and Canada, Australia, and 14 other countries) for awhile. Prince Charles and Prince William are both in line next. And unless William has a daughter instead of a son, we might not have another queen, at least in our lifetime. And definitely not like the one we have known for all of our life.
She is now much older, and probably wiser. I have always respected the elderly. Especially those who simply are figureheads, and not the day to day decision makers, but those whose expert opinions are sought. And the Queen lately reminds me of just that. She is only an influencer, someone we should look up to. Royalty in its shining and defining glory. And not to forget dignity.
