Armenian Women: Political Exploitation?
Blogian says that while he supports the idea of a woman’s movement in Armenia, he is concerned by Saturday’s rally staged by female supporters of former president, Levon Ter-Petrossian, in support of detained opposition activists. The blog wonders if this isn’t political exploitation.
This is sort of cherry picking, but I am not comfortable with the fact that Armenia’s opposition is exploiting women and young girls in their political struggle to gain power. Don’t get me wrong - I want to see a women’s movement in Armenia; I want to see more women in the parliament. But the fact is that women are oppressed in Armenia on a daily basis and used by men for their personal ends. In this case, women are used for politics. […] Again, I don’t mind women of any race and ethnicity being active. But when they are used by men for their political and nationalist purposes it is quite troubling.
