GT, depending on where video and photographs are shot, numbers can be visually deceptive. My estimate is admittedly just that, but one not too far off the mark, I think. Actually, the BBC under-reported the numbers although they didn't have a reporter here for this one so I think it's largely a problem with sources and possibly from the very beginning of the event.

According to Armenian media, 200 people gathered on Wednesday for the memorial ceremony outside the mayor's office in the capital Yerevan, where the clashes took place.

http://news.bbc.co.uk/2/hi/europe/7338321.stm

Anyway, my number largely fits in with estimates from other independent or even pro-opposition but more credible sources. Reuters put it at between 1,000 - 1,500 while RFE/RL said "hundreds" and "several hundred."

During Sarksyan's inauguration between 1,000 and 1,500 protesters laid flowers in the central Yerevan square where the eight people had died in March's violence.

http://www.reuters.com/article/latestCrisis/idUSL09879147

With this in mind, several hundred Ter-Petrosian gathered at the site of the deadly violence, over one kilometer away from Liberty Square, to remember its victims. Scores of police in riot gear looked on as they lit candles and lay flowers at a granite podium from which opposition leaders addressed a much bigger crowd on March 1. The silent remembrance quickly turned into an anti-government rally, with mostly female participants chanting “Freedom!” and “Levon!”

Therefore, I'm sticking with my figure, although it could have been a little over a thousand as I didn't do an actual headcount and guestimated instead. Anyway, I don't doubt that the actual number of supporters is higher. However, those gathered at least represent the most active female part of LTP's support base. Many were recognizable, for example, from the front of the Liberty Square meetings.

[...] Onnik Krikoryan, a British photojournalist, reports how he was prevented from photographing the inauguration ceremony, despite showing press passes and the fact, that the event was held in a public area. Prevented from covering that event, as was the case for almost every other photographer in Yerevan, there was always the opposition memorial to the eight killed during post-election clashes on 1 March occurring adjacent to the French Embassy. Somewhat unfortunately for Sargsyan, not only did 9 April mark the day of the start of his presidency, but it was also the traditionally observed 40th day after the deaths. [...]

Onnik, judging from the videos at Unzipped blog (http://unzipped.blogspot.com/2008/04/armenian-police-in-action-beatings.html) there were many more than your estimated 1000. But, the point is not their number. If 1000 risked their life shouting "shame on you" on the republican square after March 1 events, the real number is 100s times more.

GT, ironically, it was much less than 1,000 yesterday so yeah, even if the possibility of a protest outside the Opera was very real, the measures were uncalled for although what we're used to. Same was true in 2003, for example. Besides, coming from the U.K., I'm still not used to public areas being closed and roads blocked for events that the public actually has the right to not only be close to, but also involved in.

1. absolutely great pictures!!!
2. for what this pain? I guess for democracy and freedom.

I am Swiss and watch you for here.
Best wishes for your peaceful demonstrators.
If you win, I will be very happy to visit your country. To visit serge & his military guys I am not really keen...
And god bless the poor ones who are in prison now. I read on Amnesty International that they are tortured. Its important that people worldwide write urgent appeals (see on homepage of A.I.)
