Meetings, Meetings…
Panorama.am reports that the Foreign Minister has met with the diplomats and representatives of international organizations to instruct them on what is being done to stabilize the political situation in Armenia. Meanwhile, PanArmenian.Net says that former president Levon Ter-Petrossian has met with the EU Envoy for the South Caucasus, Peter Semneby
The meeting was to discuss the “the internal political situation in Armenia and possibilities of its normalization,” but PanArmenian.Net also reports that the radical opposition allege the authorities are not interested in compromise. They also refuse to accept the ruling of the Constitutional Court alleging political pressure on its judges.
Interestingly, Ter-Petrossian had used a previous ruling by the court in 1996 to validate his disputed re-election as president arguing that the court’s decision is final. This means he is effectively ignoring PACE requests to accept the ruling as well as its belief that opposition detainees not guilty of serious offenses should be released.
“Representatives of the ex-President’s movement are ready for dialogue. But is dialogue possible when one of the sides reaches out one hand and tries to beat with the other. Many of our team-mates have been arrested; prisons have been filled with people persecuted for their political views. Holding talks when our compatriots are kept in custody would be treason,” he said.
