New Coalition Government Formed

PanArmenian.Net reports that a new power-sharing agreement has been signed which will result in a four party coalition government. Following the 1 March clashes between supporters of former president, Levon Ter-Petrossian, and security forces, perhaps the reason is understandable, but it seems unfortunate that the Armenian Revolutionary Federation — Dashnaktsutyun (ARF-D) are once again part of government.

Their candidate, Vahan Hovannisian, was particularly critical of the authorities during the pre-election campaign period. On the other hand, faced with an adversary such as Ter-Petrossian who as president banned the ARF-D and threw many of its leaders in jail, perhaps it’s hardly a surprise. Still, many party members might have preferred them to have remained separate from both the government and the radical opposition.

The agreement was signed by Serzh Sargsyan, chairman of the Republican Party of Armenia, Gagik Tsarukyan, chairman of Prosperous Armenia party, Artur Baghassaryan, chairman of Orinats Yerkir party and Armen Rustamyan, member of the ARF Dashnaktsutyun Supreme Body.

The purpose of the coalition is formation of an efficient trustworthy power, consolidation of human rights protection mechanisms, development and implementation of a joint program, improvement of living conditions, efficient resistance to internal and external challenges.
