   Italy is not considered a good example in politics (not in the last 1700 years…), but it provides a good example of a situation from some points of view alike the present one in Armenia.

   There was the Prodi vs Berlusconi election in 1996. In 1998 the Prodi government lost the confidence of the Parliament. He disappeared from the national political life for some ten years and came back for the Prodi vs Berlusconi election in 2006. One of the reason why his second government lost confidence again is the deadlock in the Parliament and the frontal confrontation with the opposition, consequence of inability to wash away poisons and hates fetched in more than a decade of mutual un-respectful propaganda. Berlusconi, being the more charismatic of the two, played the role of the lion in creating the conditions of a destructive rhetoric, of course.

   Anyway, whoever was the less correct, their strategies led nowhere, till Prodi simply decided to step backward, and leave his leadership to someone else. He also realized he was no longer loved enough to collect the votes of those who, if not “for” him, would have voted “against” Berlusconi.

   Not by chance, the first few negotiations on reforms -that cannot really be delayed anymore- started between the new leadership (Walter Veltroni and his new Democratic Party) and Berlusconi. The road is all uphill and steep, but at least a little door was opened. Or, at least, the electoral campaign is less aggressive than expected.

   Of course, Prodi retiring to his previous activity of University Professor, is a realistic, generous, not egoistical choice. …
