Armenia: Constitutional Court Appeal
Mediamax reports on the appeal by former president Levon Ter-Petrossian to annul the results of the 19 February presidential election in Armenia currently being considered by the Constitutional Court. According to the report, Ter-Petrossian specifically raises the issue of president-elect Serge Sargsyan carrying on his duties as prime minister during the official pre-election campaign period and the introduction of a state of emergency this weekend.
Yet another reason for the discontent of the Ex-President is the detention by the law-enforcement bodies, many witnesses, who, according to him, can present valuable information on violations during the elections. According to him, because of that, “a deficit of legitimacy of CC decision may appear, and I do not know how this fact will be perceived by the people and the international community”.
Ter-Petrossian reportedly refused to answer questions from local journalists present. In another report, Mediamax says that Chairperson of the Central Election Commission (CEC) of Armenia is currently giving evidence and refutes claims that the final results do not reflect actual voting on polling day. ArmeniaNow publishes the full text of Ter-Petrossian’s official statement to the court.
