British Embassy Message — Disturbances in City Center
The British Embassy has released an advisory to its citizens living and working in the Armenian capital, Yerevan. The message came a few hours after police dispersed an unsanctioned opposition rally and occupation of Liberty Square. From the sound of things, the situation remains tense and there might be further clashes later in the day.
Following the presidential elections there have been ongoing political demonstrations in central Yerevan, mainly focussed around Freedom Square (around the Opera). This demonstration was cleared by the authorities on the morning of Saturday, 1 March, with some reports of violence. The area is closed. The situation in the city centre, particularly around Freedom Square, remains tense.
We advise British citizens to avoid the city centre and central squares, particularly Freedom Square while this situation continues. There is also a risk of disturbances elsewhere in the city. Avoid the area of known demonstrations and other locations where demonstrations may take place. If it is necessary to be in the vicinity of a demonstration, we urge you to exercise vigilance and caution at all times, and leave the vicinity as soon as possible. Demonstrations can attract large numbers, and even if intended to be peaceful can turn confrontational.
There are reports of a further demonstration planned for this afternoon at 3pm in the city centre, possibly around the Freedom Square / Northern Avenue area. We advise British citizens to avoid the area of this demonstration if at all possible.
We will continue to monitor the situation and will issue updates to the British community as necessary.
