Alexander Iskandarian on Armenian Presidential Election

E-Channel interviews Caucasus Media Institute Director Alexander Iskandarian on the outcome of the 19 February presidential election in Armenia. Interestingly, the interview might be considered somewhat controversial given concerns with the vote count in 16 percent of polling stations on election day.

Can we consider Serzh Sargsyan’s 52-percent victory to be a convincing one?

95-percent results happen in critical situations. However, it happens as a result of national love or in revolutionary situations. Thus, 52 percent could be considered normal. Anyway, the Armenian public has started voting in a more rational way.

Were there any surprises as a result of voting?

For me, the votes received by Serzh Sargsyan and Levon Ter-Petrossian were unexpected. I thought both of them would obtain more votes. In general, nothing was unexpected. The electoral situation was changing very quickly, and 3 or 4 days prior to the elections I was thinking differently from what I thought 1 or 2 weeks prior to that.
