Ter-Petrossian Claims Notorious General’s Support
A1 Plus reports that former president and candidate in Tuesday’s presidential election, Levon Ter-Petrossian, claims that two Deputy Ministers of Defense, the notorious Manvel Grigorian and Gagik Melkonian, “are with the nation and will fight for the nation’s candidate.” Neither has confirmed such claims although as was the case in the 2003 vote, it is likely that both agreed to keep the military out of the internal affairs of the country as the constitution dictates.
“Manvel Grigoryan and Gagaik Melkonyan consider themselves the guarantors of the nation’s security”, continued Ter-Petrosyan and ensured that the whole army command would join them.
After Ter-Petrsoyan’s speech the Liberty Square was resounded: “Manvel, Manvel”, “Gagik, Gagik”.
Grigorian is infamous for terrorizing the population in Etchmiadzin and the surrounding Armavir region and is usually more noted for falsifying the vote in support of the authorities at times of elections. His Yekrapah Union of War Veterans was notorious during Ter-Petrossian’s presidency for widespread human rights violations although also partly responsible for the former leader’s 1998 resignation.
