Deja Vu

After Tuesday’s disputed presidential election in Armenia, the opposition is obviously protesting reported irregularities. Interestingly, a friend — a prominent academic in the Diaspora — sent me the following email this morning and referred to Ter-Petrossian’s equally disputed re-election in 1996 when tanks and soldiers were sent out onto the streets of Yerevan.

The irony is not lost on many of us although Kocharian and Sargsyan haven’t gone as far as Ter-Petrossian did in 1996 to maintain power against protest demostrations — yet.

It looks so much like 1996. Then, Ter-Petrosyan, Sargsian and Baghdasarian were allies …

Baghdasarian had a TV program on law, where he brought in guests who argued that the opposition claims of fraud were groundless…
