Armenian Analyst: Interesting Campaign
E-Channel reports that the Caucasus Media Institute’s Alexander Iskandaryan believes that the pre-election campaign period for next week’s presidential vote has been “interesting.” Indeed, the analyst says that the outcome is hard to predict, and not least because while Sargsyan and Ter-Petrossian have predictable and long-standing support bases, there is a huge mass of people stuck inbetween still making their minds up.
According to Iskandaryan, the voters are divided into three main groups. In the first group, there are people voting in favor of stability. This group is not big, and only their support will not be sufficient to win. The second group contains the segment of protestors that consciously vote against the present authorities. This is an essential force but not as essential as to change the situation and to ensure victory for one of the candidates. The third is the indifferent and non-politicized segment that, according to Iskandaryan, had its essential role at the parliamentary elections, “At these elections, the task of Levon Ter-Petrossian is to make that segment protestors, and the task of Serzh Sargsyan is to leave it as it is.”
