Levon Ter-Petrossian: J’Accuse

27_october_0001E-Channel reports that at Saturday’s pre-election campaign rally by Levon Ter-Petrossian in Yerevan’s Liberty Square, the former president has directly linked attempts to find a solution to the Karabakh conflict with the 27 October 1999 assassinations in the Armenian National Assembly.

Of course, he doesn’t offer any evidence, but his words will be taken by many as effectively accusing the incumbent president and prime minister of masterminding the crime. Demirchian’s son and Sargsyan’s brother are the main support base for his 2008 presidential election bid.

The first president talked about a document published in Haykakan Zhamanak, presenting the times in 1999 when the project of substituting Karabakh with Meghri was being discussed. He announced that the project had not worked because Karen Demirchyan, then chairman of the National Assembly, and Vazgen Sargsyan had impeded it at the Security Council session. “And their life became the price of it,” Ter-Petrossian stated, reminding that the crime of October 27, 1999, had been committed after that. Ter-Petrossian thinks the document about Meghri “will be one of the most important motives of revealing the crime of October 27.”
