Election Clashes Ahead?
Archuk’s blog says that the electoral system in Armenia is directly linked to local clan structures. As a result, the blogger believes that an electoral battle between the prime minister and former president can only lead to clashes between past and present economic and political interests.
As people in power locally are in power thanks to the central government,in order to stay where they are, they support the current government. Unless, the new ones offer them something better ang bigger, of course, and this can be potentially very dangerous, deepening the state of feudal rule in the country even more. If you can’t get the local clans to support you, you get the ex -local elite , the ones that were replaced for one reason or another, to come out of silence, promising them their old businesses, local governement positions and so on. This creates a lot of tension in regions, starting clan wars, that stay largely uncovered in media, unless fighting happens during a candidate’s visit. Quite worrying developments.
