Levon Ter-Petrossian Marches (Reprise)

levon 0001At time of writting, Levon Ter Petrossian’s supporters are again marching in Yerevan. However, there seems little point in photographing it as security has been so tight around the former president that it is near impossible to see him during such marches let along photograph one of the main candidates for the 19 February presidential election in Armenia.

Even so, the rally in Liberty Square leading up to the march was noticeably larger than before although the organizers once again claimed 100,000 people in attendance in the area behind the Yerevan Opera even though it can actually hold no more than 20-25,000. Even so, if previous rallies had been easy to manoeuvre through, this one was more difficult.

levon 0002Numbers wise it can be said to be probably larger than yesterday’s Vahan Hovannisian and last week’s Artur Baghdasarian rallies. However, most of the audience again seemed to be male or those over the age of 40. Even so, the meeting might yet give Ter-Petrossian some ammunition in attempts to win over the support of Baghdasarian and also Raffi Hovannisian.

Word of that possible turn of events is expected today or by early next week. Indeed, whether the election goes to a second round and whether the main opposition challenger to Sargsyan will be Ter-Petrossian might well depend on it.
