My Sonny Bunny & the Presidential Election
Apart from being called in to “have my visa checked” and being quizzed for two hours by OVIR on my opinion on the political situation after photographing every opposition meeting during and following the 2003 presidential election, or this time being labeled an “agent for several services” by members of Ter-Petrossian’s pre-election campaign team, even though they still used my photographs regardless, you wouldn’t think the 19 February vote would affect a British citizen personally, but it has.
On Monday, for example, my ex-wife was instructed by my six-year-old son’s school teacher to bring him along with other parents and children to attend a pre-election campaign rally by the prime minister, Serge Sargsyan. David’s mother refused and I’m glad to say that no repercussions have emerged in terms of my son’s schooling, but it can be confirmed that yes, this activity is occurring. Ironically, however, my son says he would have liked to have gone and not least for the free pop concert preceding and following the pre-election campaign event.
So far there has been no attempts to influence parents — to vote for Sargsyan, for example — but if there are, I’ll post an update. Meanwhile, my landlords have received their voter mail shots from Haypost — two for them, and one for their adult daughter. Thing is that they’ve been out of the country for a decade. Basically, there are still problems with the voter’s list, but for now this is a matter of information so I suppose I should alert OVIR to the fact.
And among people I know from outside Yerevan now living in the capital, they seem unaware of the possibility to register here. In both cases, I suppose none of us particularly want to deal with the police. If anyone would like to advise what I can do without giving myself an additional headache, please contact me at the email address below or leave a comment although I also plan to consult with some friends later tonight.
