Symbol of the Revolution?
I suppose it’s kind of funny in a way. That is, to discover that an image (left) I took at the first rally of former president Levon Ter-Petrossian appears to have turned into one of three main images his supporters demonstrate and march under. It’s been turned into everything from badges to flyers and banners.
It’s even funnier when you consider Ter-Petrossian’s team took the image off my blog, used it as one of two main graphics for their website without even asking. When I discovered they had used it and breached copyright they apologized and said they’d pay for $100 for it. What they didn’t tell me is that it was also being used for other campaign materials. The next day at Levon Ter-Petrossian’s press conference I found that out — literally.
Anyway, kind of strange to see dozens of one of my images glaring me in the face at Ter-Petrossian’s pre-election campaign rally held today in Yerevan. Even stranger when you consider the story behind the image and later problems with additional copyright infringement as well as the fact that if Ter-Petrossian’s people protest after the 19 February presidential election in Armenia, they might well be doing so under one of my photographs.
Still, I have to admit that it looks good and it’s the best image of the campaign that I’ve seen for now, at least. Not so good that even though they’ve used my images, eleven out of twelve times without permission, they don’t allow me much access to Ter-Petrossian and I usually end up getting shoved away by security although Nikol Pashinian is always very nervous but helpful now when he sees security approach me.
Anyway, photos from the 2008 presidential election so far are available for viewing on my Flickr site, and yes, in case you didn’t get the message by now, they’re under copyright and licensed only according to the terms of Creative Commons.
