I'm late - but I think I've said all I ment to here about LTP's manifesto.

As to the Republican dominated parliament - I'm sure, that if the president is from "Rule of Law" party tomorrow, most of the Republicans will change their color in a snap and become "Rule of Law" in a matter of a week. There are very few people who are really following political principles when entering a ruling party in this country.

I haven't followed Vahan Hovhannisian as a politician. The few facts I know about him are from media - him emptying his pistol in the Paplavok cafe in a drunken stupor, or him being one of the ringleaders of the Dro terrorist organization.

I don't know about his political views beyond being a Dashnakcakan. He is probably not a remarkable one to have slipped from my attention.

Yeah, well, I admit I was somewhat shocked about the family relations between Vahan Hovannisian and Serzh Sarkisian. As they say, much of the problems facing Armenia, especially regarding corruption, boils down to what people describe as "keeping it all in the family."

It's probably why Raffi Hovannisian is reported to be waiting to see if Vahan Hovannisian (no relation) doesn't withdraw his candidacy before deciding who to support in the election now that it's been decided he can't run. Candidates have until 9 February to reject their nominations if they want.

Incidentally, one friend, a Dashnak member from the Diaspora, believes Vahan Hovannisian as a candidate was a mistake. Probably, I agree. Armen Rustamian strikes me as a much more down to earth, articulate guy and better candidate for the ARF-D.

Anyway.

BTW: Regarding the manifestos of every candidate, a question. How possible is it to implement any policies with a Republican and Prosperous Armenia dominated parliament and also, I suppose, the requirement for keeping in line with CE obligations and suggestions?

If the deputies maintain their partisanship then there will be deadlock with a president that is not from the current government, i.e. Dashnaks or the Republicans. But they may continue to rubber stamp laws since most of them don't read them before voting for them anyway.

But I think there will be a quick process of rats abandoning ship if they sense that there might actually be a chance for LTP to become the president like they did in 1997.

I wonder if Vahan Hovhannisian being in-laws with Serj Sargsian creates a conflict of interest. How seriously can ARFD present itself as an alternative if they are part of the current system?

They have discredited themselves by being part of the successive governments since 1998.

This is an issue that is going to hit any of the candidates, I think. Of course, a parliament can also vote for them as well, but with so much money sitting as MPs, I have to wonder. The ARF-D, Orinats Yerkir and Heritage as some kind of "constructive voice" in parliament is outnumbered even when combined.
