LEVON TER-PETROSYAN PUT FORWARD HIS CANDIDATURE

A1 Plus, 29 November, 2007

The RA First President Levon Ter-Petrosyan has submitted his documents on the nomination to the RA Central Electoral Commission (CEC) today at 11:40 a.m. . But he has not submitted the documents personally, his representative has done it instead.

Levon Ter-Perosyan is the second candidate to submit the documents to the CEC. Yesterday Chairman of the “National Unity” party Artashes Geghamyan submitted his documents. The candidates may submit their documents to the CEC by 6 December.

SERZH SARKISSIAN HAS APPLIED FOR CERTIFICATE

A1 Plus, 28 November, 2007

So far ten presidential nominees have applied to the Passport and Visa Department of the RA Police to get certificates of RA citizenship over the past ten years, among them RA Prime Minister Serzh Sarkissian, People’s Party leader Tigran Karapetian, former president Levon Ter-Petrossian, AMK leader Artashes Geghamian, World Boxing Champion Israel Hakobkokhian, OYP leader Arthur Baghdasarian, NZhK leader Aram Karapetian, Heritage Party leader Raffi Hovannissian, National Concord Party leader Aram Harutiunian and RA citizen Vardan Parakhchian.

Only the NZhK leader was denied a certificate. The police states that the documents submitted by Aram Karapetian do not meet Articles 65 and 72 of the RA Electoral Code. For instance, Aram Karapetian hasn’t lived in Armenia for the past ten years.

Paul, don't forget that the government bureaucracy will vote for Serj for the fear of getting fired and for their job security. After all, Serj is their boss.

I'm worried too many third party candidates getting involved will split the opposition vote and assure Serge a plurality of the vote. Perhaps with a lot of choices, seeing as I've heard of quite a few who dislike both Levon and Serge, they won't be forced into voting for either. I think quite a few said they disliked Serge but would vote for him over Levon, but then again I'm sure there's a lot of the opposite as well.
That said, I think with Serge being such an established candidate, so many others getting involved would be a bad thing since he'll maintain his large block of votes while the average voter who opposes him has no clear choice. Since someone besides Serge needs to reach a plateau of votes to force a run-off, it seems many candidates would be worse (for those tired with the crap that goes on in this administration, and in my opinion for Armenia) than a few.
