Detainees Released — Video
After their detention yesterday for announcing Friday’s opposition rally by megaphone and handing out leaflets in the city center, A1 Plus reports that supporters of the former first president, Levon Ter Petrosian, were released in the early hours of the morning. According to one of those detained, newspaper editor Nikol Pashinian, their release came thanks to the intervention of Ter Petrosian himself.
Nikol Pashinian, David Matevosian, Tevos Matevosian, Michael Hairapetian, Tigran Ter-Margarian. Petros Makeyan with his son Shogher Matevosian, and three other proponents of the “Alternative” Initiative were released at 3:20 a.m.
To remind, they were detained October 23 for distributing leaflets on the October 26 rally in Yerevan streets.
The participants of the march megaphoned the date and venue of the rally. At the intersection of Abovyan and Koryun streets some high-ranking police officials hand out their megaphone and asked to stop the march. The Alternative members presented to the policemen the provisions of the law stipulating such marches. They found the policemen’s request illegal. Afterwards, a heated argument occurred, special operation forces used tear gas against the participants and took them into custody.
They were welcomed with warm applauses and shouts by people assembled near the police department for eight hours, “Levon! Victory!
People embraced and congratulated each other on hard-won victory.
“We have said many times that we shall back Ter-Petrosian at the upcoming election. Ter-Petrosian is both a presidential nominee and a perfect partner for us. He spent a few hours in the police department with us. We were released thanks to the first president,” Pashinian said the moment he left the police department.
He thanked the presentees for support and stubborn struggle. “We were really encouraged by your shouts and realised that our efforts were not in vain. I call on you to continue our mission and struggle to the end if any of us is detained again.”

As mentioned on this blog before, the nomination of Ter Petrosian now looks definite and news such as this can only bolster his supporters. It is unprecedented for a presidential candidate, or any politician save for the president or prime minister for that matter, to be able to show himself able to confront the police and work for the release of his supporters. Two months ago, for example, few would have thought this possible.
In related news, Ararat Zurabian, Chairperson of Ter Petrosian’s Armenian Pan-National Movement (HHSh) is reported by A1 Plus as saying that even those withing governmental structures will support his candidacy. He also confirms that Ter Petrosian is likely to run for president.
Undoubtedly, Levon Ter-Petrosian will run for presidency, said Ararat Zurabian, the chairman of board of the Armenian Pan-National Movement (HHSh). According to him, Ter-Petrossian will announce about his nomination during the October 26 rally.
He says Ter-Petrossian’s nomination is determined by the current state in the country. “Levon Ter-Petrossian is concerned over the chaotic state in the Republic of Armenia which leads the country to ooze. He considers such permissiveness inadmissible. Armenia will finally turn into an autocratic country and become isolated from the civilized world. We still have a chance to get off this chaos,” Zurabian said.
Eight parties and 25 NGOs are confident that Ter-Petrossian is the only person capable of solving the problem.
We cooperate with other parties and organizations as well but I don’t want to give names as each force is responsible for its deeds.
According to Ararat Zurabian, some Republicans will join Ter-Petrossian’s team in the nearest future. “I am sure that many of them will sober up and second Ter-Petrossian. I think they will find a common language as many will prefer the country’s interests to personal ones.”
Zurabian’s comments follow those by the widow of one of the founders of the ruling party as saying that she is concerned by the path the party is now following. She also said that there are very definitely divisions now emerging since the prime minister, Serzh Sarkisian, took over. This appears to be borne out by conversations with some Republican party supporters and is the subject of many similar rumors in Yerevan.
