“TER-PETROSYAN IS NEITHER A WEAK NOR A STRONG RIVAL”

A1 Plus, 01 October, 2007

Today the Hayeli Club hosted the leader of the Liberal-Progressive Party (HAAK) Hovhannes Hovhannisyan and ARF Dashnaktsutyun member Spartak Seiranyan.

“Levon Ter-Petrosyan's return is of great historical importance. It will serve as a prefect bridgehead for ideological and political struggle in the forthcoming presidential election,” said the HAAK leader.

“Levon Ter-Petrosyan can be nominated like any RA citizen,” Spartak Seiranyan aid.

According to Seiranyan, the ARF Dashnaktsutyun and the All-Armenian Movement (HHSh) had agreed to fight on the bases of political, programme and ideological approaches during the Saturday meeting.

Spartak Seiranyan also added none of the ARFD members suffers from amnesia, and everyone remembers what the HHSh did. Nevertheless, politics supposes observing certain rules, and emotions have nothing to do with politics.

Spartak Seiranyan doesn’t consider Ter-Petrosyan the weakest or the strongest presidential candidate.

He thinks that an election process based on ideology is important but he is not sure it will come true, although compared with the parliamentary election, the process will move towards ideology.

Seiranyan and Hovhannisyan mentioned the ARF Dashnaktsutyun and the All-Armenian Movement as subjects of struggle based on ideology.

According to the ARFD member, the government alone cannot be blamed for the degradation of the society because voters readily accept bribes, they even demand bribes.

His opponent Hovhannes Hovhannisyan got indignant at this. “The authorities are to be blamed in this context as they degenerate people and promote bribery.”

Serj has no team. His team is administrative resource. Even HHK is not his team. Late Andranik Margarian's son already is lobbying HHK members loyal to Margarian to backup Ter-Petrosian and NOT Serj. Expect the same among Erkrapah, and among administrative apparatus. Once LTP announces his canddacy offcially, watch the cracking of the criminal pyramid little by little.

Whatever the reasons behind it, I welcome this meeting between Levon and Dashnaks. This shows that potential for civilised political dialogue is still there in Armenia, which is encouraging. By no means this may be considered a possibility of coalition or true reconciliation. From Levon’s side, he is sending signals, both internally and externally, that he is ready to be engaged in broader political dialogue, despite past or present feelings/actions. [I wish he would at last acknowledge his mistakes! Unless he does it and propose working alternative, it will be impossible for him to re-gain electorate’s trust.] On the other hand, if I were Dashnak, I would be more than happy and would do whatever I could to ensure that Levon is in presidential race. With that scenario, the main confrontation during the (pre)election period will concentrate between Serj and Levon supporters, and against such background Dashnaks will look as kind of solid and calmer alternative. [Especially, taking into account the fact that they were ‘repressed’ party during Levon’s presidency and, although a part of current political administration, quite cleverly they always make sure that people are aware of differences.] However, unless something changes cardinally, almost to the level of miracles, Serj is the winner.
