RFE/RL Signs AR Radio Contract
If the recent controversy surrounding Public Radio’s decision to end retransmission of RFE/RL’s broadcasts was the center of attention for many media outlets over the past few weeks, news that it has now signed a contract with AR Radio has not been as widely reported. ArmInfo, however, carries the latest development in the probably ongoing saga.
RFE/RL Board of Directors resumes the contract with an Armenian private company on broadcasting of RFE/RL programmes in Armenia, says the statement by RFE/RL Board of Directors disseminated by RFE/RL. The source reports that RFE/RL broadcasting on the Armenian Public Radio may be stopped.
The contract with the intercontinental Ar Radio Company comes into effect on August 15 2007 and will be valid till September 14 2008. The network has 23 transmitters, including in Yerevan and in some remote regions. We are satisfied with the fact that our programmes will be available for many Armenian radio listeners on Ar Radio, RFE/RL President Jeffrey Gedmin said. Nevertheless, he said that efforts to continue the contract with the Public Radio of Armenia remain useless. We still believe that our programmes must be accessible to the Armenian population. Thousands of Armenian listeners trust in the radio and expect our accurate and versatile information, J. Gedmin said. He also added that public surveys showed that 15% of Armenian residents listen to RFE/RL every week.
Public Radio of Armenia stated in mid July that it will stop broadcasting RFE/RL programmes on August 9. We did our best to settle all the legal and contract problems. We are sure that there is no reason for stopping the broadcasting, Gedmin said.
ArmInfo says that the broadcasts will be for 2 hours 5 minutes every day and cover 80 percent of the country. Noyan Tapan also carries the news and says that the broadcasts on AR Radio will start from 15 August. It also notes that RFE/RL appears largely content with the new arrangement.
However, it remains to be seen whether the notorious bill to make rebroadcasting foreign programs more expensive will be reintroduced in the autumn ahead of next year’s presidential election. I’m sure many observers still don’t believe this story is over yet. Only time will tell.
