USAID / CASP Funding Available

If civil society remains unhappy about the conduct of the latest round of elections in Armenia, it at least can draw some solace from the fact that such events represent unprecedented opportunities for funding. Anyway, with the presidential election scheduled for early next year, USAID has already announced the latest round of funding through its Civil Society Advocacy Program (CASP). Grants range from about $15,000-$60,000.

The USAID Civic Advocacy Support Program (CASP), implemented by Counterpart International, announces its solicitation of Request for Applications (RFA) from civil society organizations (CSOs) to receive grant support from Counterpart/CASP for election related projects. In an effort to strengthen and expand the role and participation of CSOs and the Armenian public in the elections processes, Counterpart/CASP seeks to competitively select non-partisan election related initiatives for funding. In the context of this grant competition, “Civil Society Organizations” include the broadest group of non-government entities, including associations, unions, for-profit businesses pursing a public purpose, media, academic and research centers, and non-profit organizations.

From January to June, 2007 Counterpart/CASP supported 27 CSOs through grants and technical assistance to implement a wide range of the 2007 parliamentary elections related initiatives. Presidential election grants will also support non-partisan election related initiatives to be implemented before, on and after Election Day. […]

Unfortunately, the main site, http://www.ngo.am, is still under construction so it’s impossible to find information on what projects were funded for the 12 May 2007 parliamentary election which isn’t really conducive to promoting open and transparent elections in my opinion, but anyway. Nevertheless, the point is that money is now available for further projects timed to coincide with the presidential election and aimed at increasing the involvement of civil society and the public in the whole process.

The deadline for applications is 6 August 2007 and more information can be found in the Request for Applications available for download in Armenian and English here.
